On Tuesday, Boston-based insurance company Liberty Mutual announced to its employees that it will be looking to build a new campus in Plano in the Legacy West development.
Once completed, the Liberty Mutual campus will be home to about 4,000-5,000 jobs, joining other major companies such as Toyota and Fed Ex in the upscale development designed to complement the existing Legacy Town Center to the east of the Dallas North Tollway (DNT). After the completion of the $2 billion project and corporations begin to move into the area, Legacy West will boast several thousand employees per day.
“The reason that were excited about this new campus, is that the Legacy West area is home to many amenities, such as shops and restaurants, residential areas, hospitality offerings and all those are attractive to our potential employees and current employees,” said John Cusolito, vice president and manager of Liberty Mutual’s public and media relations department. “So locating a new campus is Plano reflects our ongoing strategy to collect and retain top talent.”
While no incentive deal has been announced by the city of Plano, the city gave nearly $6.75 million to Toyota when it relocated to the city. An incentive deal will likely be approved at an upcoming City Council meeting.
The Liberty Mutual campus will not replace the company’s newly built Boston headquarters. However, it will consolidate many of the insurance provider’s divisions into one location. Liberty Mutual employs more than 50,000 people, with more than 900 offices around the world. Cusolito said that while the company has not officially decided what offices will be housed at the Plano campus, Liberty Mutual employees from the company’s recently opened call center along the DNT will be moved once the campus is complete.
“We have a long and strong history in Texas and we're very impressed with the quality of the talent in Texas,” Cusolito said. “Right now, we’re looking at the offices nearby where the new campus will be located, to see which employees in those offices makes sense to bring into on top.”
The Liberty Mutual Plano campus is expected to be completed, with employees moving in near the end of 2017. The company is also working with local advisors and officials to finalize its plans and work on the design of the campus.
“The last piece that we’re looking at is which operations to bring into that new campus, so that is the process that were going through now as we complete the steps that were working on,” Cusolito said. “We're still working through several critical steps that we must complete.”
